Lula Calls for Maduro’s Trial to Take Place in Venezuela
“I am of the firm belief that if Nicolás Maduro is to stand trial, he should be tried in Venezuela, not abroad," he said during an interview, highlighting his belief in national legal jurisdiction over foreign intervention.
He went on to emphasize that the priority should be “the restoration of democracy in Venezuela,” but that this goal must be pursued in ways that respect the sovereignty of nations and avoid setting a precedent where one country seizes another’s leader.
The Brazilian president also drew parallels to legal cases involving Brazilian citizens in other countries, arguing that people should generally be tried under their own country’s laws rather than abroad.
This diplomatic stance comes amid broader geopolitical tensions involving Venezuela, where the former leader and his spouse remain in custody in the United States facing serious charges, including allegations related to international drug trafficking.
In addition, the Brazilian president is reportedly planning a meeting with US leadership in Washington next month, and has raised other issues in the bilateral relationship, including trade concerns between the two nations.
