SOUTHCOM Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan Visits Venezuela

(MENAFN) Gen. Francis L. Donovan, commander of the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), visited Venezuela on Wednesday for high-level engagements.

SOUTHCOM described the trip as “another historic day,” noting that Donovan began his visit in the capital, Caracas, meeting with his team of Joint Force personnel stationed at U.S. Embassy facilities, as well as interagency partners.

Later, he held discussions with interim Venezuelan authorities to review the security situation and ensure the execution of a three-phase plan outlined by the White House aimed at aligning Venezuela more closely with U.S. interests.

Donovan was accompanied by U.S. envoy Laura Dogu and Joseph M. Humire, acting U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and the Americas, for what SOUTHCOM described as “productive meetings” with the interim authorities.

The command reiterated that “The U.S. is committed to a free, safe and prosperous Venezuela for the Venezuelan people, the United States, and the Western Hemisphere.”

Donovan assumed command of SOUTHCOM in early February during a ceremony at the Pentagon, taking charge of the U.S. military operations across Latin America and the Caribbean.
