Venezuela's Interim Leader Set for U.S. Trip

(MENAFN) Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, will travel to the United States in the first such visit by a sitting Venezuelan head of state in over 25 years, a senior US official confirmed Tuesday, marking a dramatic pivot in Washington-Caracas relations.

A senior White House official stated no specific date has been finalized for Rodriguez's visit.

Rodriguez assumed the interim presidency after a US military operation on Jan. 3 resulted in the detention of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores, following months of heightened tensions centered on drug trafficking allegations.

In remarks delivered Wednesday, Rodriguez declared she was pursuing discussions with the United States without hesitation, underscoring diplomatic channels as the ideal mechanism for resolving enduring conflicts.

"We are in a process of dialogue, of working with the United States, without any fear, to confront our differences and difficulties, and to address them through diplomacy," said Rodriguez, who previously served as vice president and oil minister.

The forthcoming visit suggests a possible thaw in US-Venezuela ties following years of antagonism and economic penalties.

However, Rodriguez remains subject to US sanctions, including asset freezes, despite the diplomatic breakthrough.

The most recent visit by a Venezuelan president to American soil occurred in 1989 during Carlos Andres Perez's administration.

Rodriguez previously told lawmakers regarding the potential Washington trip that she would represent the Venezuelan population with unwavering pride and sovereign authority if called upon to make the journey.
