Trump signals imminent conversation with Maduro

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he plans to speak soon with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, amid growing speculation over potential U.S. military action in the country. “I will speak with him in a not too distant future,” Trump told Fox Radio, declining to reveal details of the conversation. “I just don't do that … I can't tell you what I'm going to tell him, but I have something very specific to say,” he added, reiterating longstanding accusations against Maduro, including alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

Maduro, meanwhile, warned earlier in the week that any U.S. military intervention would mark Trump’s “political end,” claiming that forces around the U.S. president are “provoking” an armed action that could push him “to a cliff.” He suggested that powerful U.S. sectors are seeking to exploit Venezuela to damage Trump politically, framing the situation as a deliberate provocation from both adversaries and those within Trump’s circle.

Trump emphasized that Venezuela remains open to “face-to-face” dialogue with Washington, describing diplomacy and identifying shared interests as the “invariable” policy of his administration.

Tensions between the two countries have intensified since August, when Trump ordered a military deployment in the Caribbean aimed at targeting drug cartels allegedly connected to Maduro. U.S. forces have since carried out 21 strikes on vessels claimed to be transporting narcotics, resulting in 83 deaths, and Trump has indicated the possibility of striking alleged drug trafficking targets on Venezuelan soil.
