Trump greenlights CIA covert operations in Venezuela
A news agency, citing multiple sources briefed on the matter, reported that Trump approved potential covert measures intended to prepare a battlefield for further action.
Meanwhile, the White House has reportedly reopened back-channel talks with Caracas, during which Maduro at one point indicated he might step down after a transition period.
In a televised address Monday, Maduro warned that any US military intervention would represent the “political end” of Trump’s leadership, accusing individuals around the US president of “provoking” armed conflict to harm him politically. He also reiterated that Venezuela remains ready for direct dialogue, emphasizing diplomacy as his government’s “invariable” position.
Since early September, the US has carried out 21 strikes on vessels in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific that it claimed were smuggling drugs, resulting in 83 deaths. Trump has suggested he could also target alleged drug trafficking operations within Venezuelan territory.
