Trump Approves CIA Covert Operations Inside Venezuela
The New York Times disclosed, citing multiple sources with knowledge of the decision, that Trump approved potential covert measures that analysts suggest could serve as groundwork for escalated future actions.
Simultaneously, the report revealed that the White House has quietly reestablished confidential diplomatic channels with Caracas, during which Maduro reportedly indicated potential willingness to relinquish power following a transitional phase.
In a nationally broadcast address Monday, Maduro issued a stark warning that any U.S. military incursion would represent the "political end" of Trump's leadership, charging that advisors surrounding the U.S. president were "provoking" armed confrontation to inflict political damage. He emphasized Venezuela's continued openness to bilateral negotiations, characterizing diplomacy as his administration's "invariable" stance.
Since early September, the U.S. has executed 21 military strikes against vessels in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific Ocean allegedly involved in narcotics smuggling operations, resulting in 83 fatalities. Trump has previously suggested he could authorize attacks on suspected trafficking infrastructure within Venezuelan territory itself.
