Venezuela Threatens Airlines with Permit Loss Over Flight Suspensions

(MENAFN) Venezuela has warned international airlines that suspended operations following a US security alert that they risk losing their flight permits if they do not resume services.

The country’s Transport Ministry stated on Tuesday that a 48-hour grace period for airlines that halted flights will end at 12 noon local time (1600 GMT) on Wednesday, according to a Spanish news agency.

The ministry added that the deadline was communicated during a Monday meeting with airline representatives, and any company failing to restart flights within this timeframe will have its permits to operate in Venezuela revoked.

"The Venezuelan state has taken a stand with the airlines and will take the corresponding actions. They have less than 24 hours left," a ministry source told the news agency.

The warning follows a Friday alert from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which advised heightened caution on flights to Venezuela “due to the deteriorating security situation and increased military activity” in the country.

In response, several international carriers, including TAP, LATAM, Avianca, Iberia, Gol, and Caribbean Airlines, reportedly suspended flights to Venezuela indefinitely.

Tensions between US and Venezuelan authorities have intensified since US President Donald Trump ordered a military deployment in the Caribbean in August, citing the need to target drug cartels and disrupt trafficking routes allegedly linked to President Maduro.

Caracas insists that the US military buildup is not about drugs but aims to force regime change.

Since September, the US military has conducted 21 strikes on vessels claimed to be carrying drugs, killing 83 people. These actions have drawn criticism as potentially illegal, and Trump has indicated he may target alleged drug trafficking operations on Venezuelan soil.
